Shopping in Kauai while on vacation? You may not typically think of Wal-Mart as the place to shop since you can shop at Wal-Mart on the mainland but Wal-mart is slashing prices by 50% all over the store throughout Hawaii, including Kauai perhaps partially in a bid to create news and press for their Superstore they wish to put on Kauai.

Wal-Mart is fighting for their superstore which although previously approved was stopped due to ban on big box stores recently put in on Kauai. The sale will be run this coming week and Wal-Mart will be putting on lots of ads to advertise the event.

While vacationing on Kauai you may yet see a Wal-Mart supercenter in spite of the ban on “big-box” stores. Wal-Mart says that plans to make their existing store a supercenter were approved before the ban went into effect.

The ban of big-box stores says that no retail or wholesale establishment can develop a store bigger than 75,000 square feet.

The expanded Wal-Mart supercenter would be 185,000 square feet. Their current store is 119,00 square feet.

Shopping in Kauai on a vacation is an enriching experience with local hidden treasures found nowhere else and even when you venture into a well known store like the new Walgreens that will soon be opening across the state of Hawaii, you will still find local products.

Walgreen, the largest drugstore chain in the nation, will be opening up 40 stores across Hawaii and they are being welcomed with open arms as they are going to have local island products in the stores.

“Kona coffee, macadamia nuts, things that are not necessarily so common on the mainland,” said Dana Psomas, the district manager for Walgreens.

Kauai Village is one of Kauai’s largest shopping centers covering eight acres with a stunning ten foot waterfall in an open air court. The land is traversed with stores, restaurants and a series of landscaped ponds and streams complete with walking bridges and walkways. It is located on the Kuhip Highway, midway between the southern resort area of Poipu and the northern resort area of Princeville. It was first opened in 1990 and has an impressive 110,000 square of leasable area with over 30 ships and restaurants.

Located just steps away from the Waipouli Beach Resort is the Kauai Village Shopping Center. The Kauai Village built in 1990 is currently undergoing expansion under new ownership who purchased the shopping center for over 40 million.

“The ownership is planning a remodeling of Kauai Village to help enhance the center to fulfill the demand of the local Kaua‘i residents and the increasing tourist base,” Faris Lee Chairman David Lee said in a release. “The vision is to create an exciting resort-style shopping center for Kaua‘i.”

The Kauai Village Shopping Center is home to over 30 shops, and covers 110,000 square feet. It was first opened in 1990 and has just been purchased by the Diversified Equity Investment Corp. in a $40 million dollar deal. Diversified will remodel the village and aims at creating a “resort-style shopping center”.

Currently the shopping center is anchored by Safeway and Longs drugs, with a number of unique restaurants and eclectic shops. Inside the beatiful open-air courtyard located in the village is a cascading waterfall, surrounded by small walking bridges and walkways, which crisscross through ponds and streams. One of the highlights of the village is two stunning murals painted by the renouned marine artist, Wyland. It also showcases a clock tower which stands tall at three-stories high.

Shopping in Kauai is an experience of the ancient, the beautiful and the new as you find hidden treasures in open air shopping villages or malls throughout this colorful island. The Coconut Grove Marketplace is the largest and perhaps the most famous.

When staying at Waipouli Beach Resort shopping in the Coconut Marketplace is only a little over a mile away.
