It’s the voyage of a lifetime. Nearly a dozen students have set sail on the Hokule’a and they’ll be looking to the sky to guide them.
Eleven students, ages 16 to 19, are sailing from Oahu to Kauai to Nihoa Island and they’re doing it without any navigational instruments.
In the past month, they’ve been in the classroom learning about navigation and safety. Now they’re ready and grateful for the chance to sail on a piece of Hawaiian history.

The readers of Travel and Leisure magazine have ranked Kauai as the Number One island in Hawaii.
Kauai Mayor Bryan Baptiste says the honor is a reflection of the residents and the aloha they share with visitors.
Travel and Leisure asked its readership during the first quarter of 2006 to rank the world’s best islands based on natural attractions, activities, restaurants, people and value.
In the overall listing of the world’s best islands, Kauai was ranked Number Two behind Indonesia’s Bali and ahead of Maui.
